Vale Joan Kellett OAM YMCA Board Member 2002 – 2016
Joan Kellett dedicated 50 years to the community of the ACT particularly in her contribution to the sport of swimming within the ACT and surrounding area and the YMCA Canberra. Her contribution spanned both administration and governance. She was the President of the local peak swimming body for over 20 years. In 2003 Joan was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for service to swimming as an administrator and official and her service to the community. In 2010 Joan was named Volunteer of the Year at the ACT Sportstar of the Year Awards, and in 2011 she was awarded Associate Membership of the ACT Sports Hall of Fame.
Joan joined the Dickson Swimming Club in 1967 and was involved in initiating a free learn-to-swim program. She was awarded life membership of the Dickson Swimming Club for her dedicated service. In addition to her swimming activities, Joan spent many years involved in the Girl Guides, a community representative in the ACT Schools Authority and also served on the board of Turner school. YMCA Canberra was privileged to have a woman of Joan’s experience, wisdom and dedication on our Board for 14 years.
Joan passed away on 21 June and was loved and admired by all who knew her. Joan will be fondly remembered by the YMCA and is a great loss to her family and the ACT Community.
Joan Kellet Memorial Service will be held at Leumeah lodge on Saturday 19th August from 2 pm.
