The Club is conducting a training group for beginning runners or those returning to running after a break who are targeting the 5 km Fun Run at the Australian Running Festival on 8 April. Those aiming for other events, including the 10km Fun Run are also welcome.
The program will start on Tuesday 14 February 2017 at 6.30 am at the entrance to Weston Park and finish with a celebratory recovery run on the Tuesday (11 April) following the event. Group training will take place on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Members may also like to participate in the YMCA of Canberra Runners Club events as part of their training. Any additional training suggested will need to be undertaken by participants in their own time.
Experienced runners will walk/jog with participants at each group session.
- 8 week training program;
- Pre-race dinner with trainers and other training group participants;
- Mentoring and advice from experienced runners; and
- YMCA red T shirt or singlet (women may order men's sizes if they prefer that style).
Registration does not include event entry. All participants will be responsible for their own entry. Details of the event can be found at the Australian Running Festival website.
PLEASE NOTE - You must be a member of the YMCA of Canberra Runners Club to join this training program. If you are not a 2017 member your fee will include membership for 2017. The fee is $125 less $45 for YCRC 2017 members. To get the membership discount you will be asked your name so we can check your membership. Note:- the discount will not show till you get to the payment pages. There is also a discount for participants under the age of 18.
This training group caters for social runners of mixed ability whose training times range from 4min/km to 7.30min/km. The group meets at Lennox Gardens, Flynn Drive (near the toilet block) at 6:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and meets at various venues around Canberra at 7:00am on Saturdays.
Midweek runs go for about an hour while Saturday runs are generally longer with a coffee or breakfast afterwards at a local cafe. The atmosphere of this group is very social providing members an opportunity to train and socialise with other runners.
During Autumn the TTS assists with the YCRC Half Marathon Training Group by running with the participants each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A detailed program for the Saturday run locations is produced quarterly. Click here to sign up for the TTS email list.
YMCA Canberra Half Marathon 2017 weekend will fall on May 27-28 (with the half marathon on the Sunday). This race has been a major annual event in the calendars of YCRC members and other local and interstate runners and the tradition continues.
The early bird period will run till the end of April 2017 with entries $40 for YCRC members and $60 for non-members.
Standard Registration will be open online till Thursday 25th May with entries $60 for YCRC members and $80 for non-members.
Membership is $45 for adults the calendar year and includes free entry to club races, eligibility to enrol in training groups and caters for all levels of experience.
About the Half Marathon
For many years the Half Marathon weekend has been a major annual event in the calendars of YCRC members and other local and interstate runners and the tradition continues.
Rex Foulkes, in whose memory this event is named, was a local distance runner, who died in a road accident returning to Cooma from Canberra after a race in 1970. The first Rex Foulkes Half Marathon was held on 13 September 1970 had just 24 finishers. In 2015 there were 458 entrants.

The YMCA Canberra Runners Club (YCRC) is putting the fun back into running. Join our 10/14 km Training Group and learn how much fun running can be. At the same time prepare for the Canberra Times Fun Run on Sunday 3 September 2017.
This training group is suitable for those with reasonable fitness who would like to start running, developing runners wanting to step up to the next level, former runners looking to get back into running, and runners wanting to train for the Canberra Times Fun Run with a group.

The training group starts on Sunday 16 July 2017. Our last run will be Thursday 7 September 2017. Training is on three mornings each week – Tuesday and Thursday (6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.) and Sunday (from 7:30 a.m.)
The training base will be the car park at Kuttabul Place, Acton adjacent to Lake Burley Griffin Cruises.
The cost of the program is $90 for YCRC members and $110 for non-members.
