For many years the Half Marathon weekend has been a major annual event in the calendars of YCRC members and other local and interstate runners and the tradition continues.

Rex Foulkes, in whose memory this event is named, was a local, long-distance runner, who dies in a road accident returning to Cooma from Canberra after the race in 1970. The first Rex Foulkes Half Marathon was held on 13 September 1970 had just 24 finishers. In 2015 there were 458 entrants.
