The YCRC conducts a number of training groups to assist members with their running goals. Club training groups are conducted by members who volunteer their time and expertise to facilitate these groups. All runners must be members of the YCRC and pay the appropriate registration fee.
Tuesday Thursday Saturday Training Group (TTS)
This training group caters for social runners of mixed ability whose training times range from 4 min/km to 7.30 min/km. The group meets at Lennox Gardens, Flynn Drive (near the toilet block) at 6:30 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and meets at various venues around Canberra at 7:00 am on Saturdays. The group meets all year round.
Midweek runs go for about an hour while Saturday runs are generally longer with a coffee or breakfast afterwards at a local cafe. The atmosphere of this group is very social providing members with an opportunity to train and socialise with other runners. A number of our more experienced members and distance runners will be training with the group, so it is also a good opportunity to get advice on any of your running questions.
Groups of TTS runners also attend events outside Canberra such as the Melbourne Marathon Festival and the Queenstown Marathon in New Zealand. So if you are looking for some company on an interstate trip ask around to see if others are planning to attend. During Autumn the TTS assists with the YCRC Half Marathon Training Group (see below) by running with the participants each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A detailed program for the Saturday run locations is produced quarterly.
The Club is conducting a training group for beginning runners or for those runners who are returning to the club after a break. The training group will be targeting the 5 km Fun Run for the Australian Running Festival on 14 April 2018. Those aiming for other events, including the 10 km Fun Run are also welcome.
The program will commence on 20 February 2018 and run for eight weeks, with a celebratory run on Tuesday 17 April, the week after the event. Grou training will take place on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday mornings. Members are also welcome to participate in the YMCA Canberra Runners Club events as part of their training. Any additional training suggested will need to be undertaken by participants in their own time.
The program works in with the TTS group schedule for the 13 weeks leading up to the Half Marathon, providing a structured build up to completing your first half-marathon or improving your half-marathon experience. Participants in this group include those looking to move up to the half marathon from 10 km events, and those who are returning to distance running. Experienced runners will walk/jog with participants at each group session to provide encouragement and support.
This training group is suitable for those with reasonable fitness who would like to start running, developing runners wanting to step up to the next level, former runners looking to get back into running, and runners wanting to train for the Canberra Times Fun Run 10 km or 14 km events with a group.
The eight-week training program provides a structured lead up to the Fun Run in September.
